In late 2014, we started a one-year research collaboration with Hannes Mühleisen from the Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam. This research project was funded by BeDataDriven and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
The goal of the project was to use Renjin's capability of deferring computations to implement optimizations typically used by query planners in columnar stores such as CWI's MonetDB. The results were impressive: a case study with data from the American Community Survey showed that, with these optimizations, Renjin outperformed GNU R by a wide margin. Renjin's ability to automatically parallelize computations over mutliple threads is a promising feature of the interpreter.
The results of this research were presented at the R Summit & Workshop in Copenhagen at the end of June 2015. See the blog article on renjin.org for the presentation.
